40 Days of Blessing Prayers for Ministries Page 2 Day 4 “Blessed is the man who trusts in you.” (Psalm 84:12) Father, bless those who serve our ministry as staff, volunteers and donors— Bless us with the faith to trust You in every circumstance, especially in difficult times. May we trust in You and not be afraid (Psalm 56:34). Pray these prayers from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers on your own or with your children as they begin a new semester. Prayers to Begin a School Year. God of wisdom and might, we praise you for the wonder of our being, for mind, body and spirit. The first is a short opening prayer for children to say before the class. For Christians, the season of Advent serves as a reminder both of the original waiting that was done by the Hebrews for the birth of their Messiah as well as the waiting of Christians for Christ's return from Heaven where he now sits at the Right Hand of God. God of hope, the rock we stand upon, be the centre, the focus of our lives always, and particularly this Advent time. Advent God, we journey with you, to Bethlehem’s stable and a new-born King, ears attuned to the song of angels, eyes alert for Bethlehem’s star.
Forgive us if on our journey if we are distracted by the tempting offers of this world. Keep our hearts aflame with the hope of Christmas, and the promise of a Saviour. Amen God of hope be with us in our Advent journey to the stable and beyond, be with us in our meeting and in our travelling together, be with us in our worship and our praying together, be with us in our Advent journey to the stable and beyond, our God of hope. This Advent-time we remember Mary and Joseph, giving thanks for their faithfulness, courage and obedience, stepping out into the unknown in the strength of your Spirit, playing their part in the fulfilment of your plan to bring your prodigal people home again. We pray that their example might be the pattern of our lives, that when your gentle whisper breaks through the clamour of this world and into our small corner, we might be ready to listen, and having listened, to act. Restore us, O Lord, we pray, bring us back to that place where we once met, as shepherds to the stable after hearing angels sing. Bring us back to that place when our love was fresh, not embarrassed to express itself in praise to our heavenly King.

Currently, my Facebook feed is a flurry of photos from my VBS friends in ministry, sharing their incredible decorations. VBS Directors are the most creative people on the planet! Who else can make a theme come to life using only pool noodles, cups, scrap lumber, and leftover paint? We’d never forget to prepare the physical space for VBS, so let’s give the same attention to the spiritual space. Talk to God—and listen to him—about his plans for that week of ministry.
Lay our worries at the feet of Jesus. Invite Jesus to be part of the fun and excitement. Here are a few specific ways to pray for VBS, inviting God to make this a powerful week of ministry.
Pray for open hearts. In Matthew 13, Jesus shares the story of a farmer scattering seeds. The seeds that fell on good soil thrived, producing a harvest beyond the farmer’s wildest dreams! Ask God to begin preparing kids’ hearts, softening them and opening them to take in the “seeds” of God’s Word. Pray for relationships. When VBS kids build friendships with other kids and loving adults, it creates an open door for them to begin or deepen their friendship with Jesus. Go through your registration list and “pray” the name of each child, asking God to bring a special, surprising friendship into that child’s life during VBS.
Thank God for families. Parents or caregivers are usually the ones who get kids in the door of your program. They’ve signed kids up and will likely be bringing them each day. Thank God for sending each family your way!
Thank God for parents, grandparents, or even babysitters who love him and want kids to know and love him, too. Pray for wise staff members. Crew Leaders or small group leaders hear a lot about what kids are going through, what’s on their minds, how they’re struggling, and what worries they have. Ask God to pour his wisdom into your leaders as they interact with kids, giving them the right words and actions to reflect the heart of God. Spend several minutes in silence, listening for the plans God has for your VBS. His plans may be a little different from yours!
Maybe you want huge numbersbut God just wants a certain person to be there. You may have visions of everything running perfectlybut God is going to do amazing things through “imperfect” circumstances. Rest in God’s hands, and give your program to him. Prayer is just as important as flashy posters, a dazzling stage, or all the bells and whistles. Take time to make prayer part of your prepthen get ready to see what God has in store!
